When to start potty training?

For most parents, the first question is usually when to start potty training. It's important to get this right in order to have the best chance of success.

There is no particular potty training age. Your mother, or grandmother, may well be in favor of early potty training. Many years ago, babies were potty trained as young as 6 months old!

These days, toddlers between the age of 2 and 2 1/2 are likely to be ready. Some, particularly girls, may be ready sooner. Boys are often ready later, and it may be appropriate to wait until they are 3 years old before starting to potty train.

You child will show signs of being ready. Look out for the following:

  • Is your toddler's diaper (nappy) staying dry for longer, maybe for around 2 hours?
  • Is she having regular bowell movements which you can predict?
  • Is he showing an interest in the toilet, or the potty (if you have one).
  • Is she becoming uncomfortable when her diaper is wet or soiled, and asking to have it changed?
  • Is your child showing an interest in an older sibling or you going to the toilet?

If you feel that your child may be ready, you can start introducing the idea of the potty. Have several potties around the house, particularly if you have a 2 story house.

Watch some potty videos with your toddler and read some potty books together.

Discuss what the potty is for, in language your toddler can understand, and if possible allow them to watch an older sibling or you using the toilet.

Here is a humorous video from Youtube your child can watch, although there are many good videos to buy or rent if you prefer.
