Triumphing over tantrums

Triumphing over tantrums:

When nothing you can do will make a difference to a child tantrum and your child loses control...

  • Give them enough space to cool off.

  • Keep an eye him but don't touch him or try to move him.

  • Don't make her feel trapped by looking at her directly or standing close to her

  • Don't talk to him until he's ready.

  • When she's calm, talk to her quietly. Help her to name her feelings ("You were pretty angry") and to distinguish between feelings and actions ("It's okay to feel angry, but it's not okay to throw chairs").

  • Let her know that you love her, and help her to think about how she can solve the problem next time.

Toddler temper tantrums are very common and can be dealt with in the same way. Above all, avoid giving your toddler attention while they are out of control as some come to realise that this is a way of gaining attention.
