Toddler asthma.

Generally, asthma symptoms develop before a child is 5, so if you suspect your toddler may be asthmatic, consult your doctor as soon as possible.

A wheezing child is easy to diagnose, however, the first asthma symptom in a toddler is if he is hanging on to a cough much longer than you would expect, and once their other cold symptoms have gone.

If your child is asthmatic, your doctor will probably prescribe medication to open the airways and reduce inflammation.

As with other toddler allergies you can help your child by controlling the atmosphere in your house. Dust mites, pollen, pet fur and smoke are common triggers of an asthma attack. Try to ensure that the humidity in your home doesn't go above 50% as this encourages the growth of mould and dust mites.

Asthma can be a serious condition if untreated, so always consult your doctor if you have any concerns.
