Be a strict parent. Let your 'No' be 'No!'

strict parent

Give your child clear boundaries.

When dealing with difficult children or behavior, be a strict parent. Take a firm stand. If you say "no" to your child, make sure you both understand what that means and keep to the house rule. Your child wants to know that you mean no and will challenge it to see how firm your resolve is.

Positive parenting is about making your child feel secure.

  • Knowing that you mean what you say can achieve this.

  • If your child feels that they can get their way, despite you saying no, they will continue to nag at you until you lose your temper.

  • It will also mean that they have no ‘boundaries’ which are so important for their feelings of security.

Children often ask 'why?'. There is no harm in explaining the reason to your child but don't be caught in the trap of explaining all your reasons over and over again. Instead the answer 'because that is our rule' should cover most things!
