From One to Two Years.

dad with toddler

It is possible to give children of this one to two years age group some direction, although showing by example works best, for example putting the toys away in a box and inviting them to help you.

Around the age of 2 a toddler will enjoy saying 'no'. There is little point trying to force the point with this typical toddler behaviour, although you can continue to tidy the toys yourself!

Your child will learn that they cannot have your attention while the job is being done unless they are helping. This can take a while for them to learn.

You can make a game out of the job such as racing to see who finishes first (let them win!) or counting in time, etc.

If your toddler refuses to be co-operative, just withdraw your attention. Most toddlers are desperate for attention and will soon realise that it is more fun getting a coat on and singing a song at the same time, or eating and chatting about the food on the plate, than being ignored!

Above all be patient. You will probably have to tell and show your child the same thing over and over.
