Does my child have ADHD?
Does my child have ADHD?
ADHD (Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity disorder) is a developmental disorder. Typically someone with ADHD will have problems with their attention span, their impulse control and level of activity.
Symptoms of ADHD:
Most children with ADHD will show signs of hyperactivity and lack of attention, however some children may only have lack of attention without the hyperactivity. This used to be called ADD, but is now considered a form of ADHD.
Hyperactive behavior:
- Your child may fidget and be restless all the time.
- They may not be able to sit in the same place for long.
- They may talk too much or too loudly.
- They may shout out with answers at school, not waiting and putting their hand up.
- They may be unable to wait their turn in games or activities, and try to 'jump' a queue.
- They may constantly interrupt other people.
Lack of attention:
- Your child may have trouble following instructions.
- He or she may not seem to be listening to you or their teacher.
- A child with ADHD may not be able to give their full attention to an activity.
- They may be disorganised and lose things often.
- They may be unable to plan ahead and be very forgetful.
ADHD treatment:
Generally a combination of treatments is best. You doctor may suggest:
- ADHD Medication (which may help to reduce the hyperactivity)
- Behavior therapy (to limit the difficult behavior)
- Psychotherapy (to increase your child's self esteem and sense of self worth)
If you suspect that your child may have ADHD,
consult your doctor. He or she will put you in touch with a specialist who can test your child, then if necessary devise a personalised treatment plan.
