Depression in teenagers

depression in teenagers

Depression in teenagers, just like at any other age, is an illness which gives feelings of hopelessness and despair. These feelings can continue for a long time and prevent the person from living a normal, balanced life.

Depression among teenagers is quite common. Teen depression statistics show that around 5% of children and teenagers suffer from depression at some point in their lives.

There are many causes of teen depression. Children and young people under stress, or who suffer from ADHD, behavior or anxiety disorders are more at risk than others. Adolescent girls are particularly at risk.

If you think that your child or teenager is becoming depressed it is important to consult your doctor.

These are some of the possible symptoms of teen depression that your teenager might be displaying:

  • Unexplained frequent crying

  • Pessimism about their future

  • A lack of personal care

  • Apathy, lack of interest in activities that would normally appeal to them

  • Spending a lot of time alone, when they were previously sociable

  • Low self esteem

  • Irritable, angry

  • Frequent illnesses

  • Changes in school performance, eating or sleeping patterns

  • Trying to run away from home

  • Talking about committing suicide

It is important to note that some of these examples, in isolation, do not indicate depression in teenagers . If your teen is displaying several of these symptoms, or just one of the last two, it is important to take it seriously .

Talk to your teenager and consult your doctor on depression teen treatment. If your teen is unwilling to talk to you, your doctor may be able to refer her to a therapist.

Do not ignore the problem, however uncommunicative your teenager has become. He needs your love and support, and he probably needs professional help to overcome his teen depression.
