Children tips on how to deal with rule breaking
Children tips:You need to make it clear that rule breaking or misbehaving, leads to behavior consequences.
- For example, if your toddler wants to walk instead of staying in the buggy, and then tries to go on the street even though you have said “no,” put him back into the buggy or bring him home right away.
- If your child refuses to tidy the toys away, explain that if you have to do it the toys will be put away for a day/24 hours/a week (depending on their age).
- Carry out your threat
if necessary and stick to it, don't give in an hour later!
- Your child needs to understand he has to live with the behavior consequences when he doesn't follow your rules.
- Make sure you follow through with consequences when he or she breaks the rules. If you don't stick to your rules, they learn that you're not really serious about behavior consequences.
- It is best to have a variety of consequences which they know about in advance. Using a reward chart or
a behavior chart
can help with this.
