Baby teething
Baby teething:
Babies first teeth can appear at any time, but most first teeth appear around the 6 month mark.
Unfortunately, for those first teeth to appear, it is necessary for them to push their way through the gums, which is what causes the pain.
Your baby may well be in pain for some time before the tooth appears. You may notice he is drooling more than usual, and maybe chewing on his bottle, or a toy.
Some babies suffer more than others, but most will experience some pain with each tooth, so this will go on until he has his complete set of milk teeth (first teeth).
Ways to minimise the discomfort:
Offer your baby cold foods which can be soothing, such as fruit purees. If your baby has finger foods, some carrot or apple to chew on can help.
Teething rings are helpful, but make sure they are clean before you offer them to your baby.
If your baby is in lots of discomfort, you can offer her liquid paracetamol. Check the instructions for the correct dosage. This is particularly important at night to ensure that your baby (and you) get a good night's sleep.
